What is SQL Azure?
SQL Azure provides a relational database management system for the Windows Azure platform, and is based on SQL Server technology. For information on the data storage offerings available on the Windows Azure platform, see Data Storage Offering on the Windows Azure Platform.

Note: Connecting to SQL Azure via OLE DB is not supported.
Although developing applications for SQL Azure is very similar to developing applications for SQL Server, you should be aware of some key differences:

SQL Azure Database provides a large-scale multi-tenant database service on shared resources. In order to provide a good experience to all SQL Azure Database customers, your connection to the service may be closed due to the following conditions:
Excessive resource usage
Connections that have been idle for 30 minutes or longer
Failover because of server failures

When your connection to the service is closed, you will receive one of the so-called transient errors, meaning the problem often goes away by itself. It is recommended to implement the retry logic in your SQL Azure applications to catch these errors. When an error occurs, your application should re-establish the connection and then re-execute the failed commands or the query. For more information, see SQL Azure Connection Management.
Regardless of the client library chosen, data is transferred using tabular data stream (TDS) over a secure sockets layer (SSL). SQL Azure doesn’t support unencrypted connections. This will ensure data transmission is secure and can help prevent man-in-the-middle attacks.
SQL Azure Database does not support tables without clustered indexes. If a table is created without a clustered constraint, a clustered index must be created before an insert operation is allowed on the table.
SQL Azure supports local transactions. These types of transactions are done with the Transact-SQL commands BEGIN TRANSACTION, ROLLBACK TRANSACTION, COMMIT TRANSACTION. They work exactly the same as they do on SQL Server.
Some SQL Server Transact-SQL Statements are not supported by SQL Azure. For the lists of supported, partially supported, and unsupported Transact-SQL statements, see Transact-SQL Reference (SQL Azure Database).

Create a SQL Azure Server
Before you can use SQL Azure, you must first create a Windows Azure platform account, which allows you to access all the Windows Azure services, including SQL Azure. For information, see Windows Azure Free Trial.

After you have signed up, you can use Windows Azure Platform Management Portal to create and manage your SQL Azure server.

Log into the Windows Azure Platform Management Portal.
In the navigation pane on the left, click Database.
At the top of the navigation pane, expand Subscriptions, click the subscription in which you want to create the database server, and then click Create. This opens the Create Server wizard.


Select a region in which you want to host your SQL Azure server, and then click Next. Typically, you want to choose a region that is closer to your location to reduce network latency.
Type the Administrator login name and the password, and then click Next.
Note: SQL Azure only supports SQL Authentication; Windows authentication is not supported.
Click Finish. You will configure the firewall rules in the Configure Access to the SQL Azure Server section.
In the navigation pane, expand the subscription in which you created the database server, and then click the newly created SQL Azure server.

In the Properties pane on the right, it lists the Fully Qualified DNS Name (FQDN) and other properties of the SQL Azure server. You will need the FQDN to build your connection string. In the middle pane, it lists the master database that is created when the SQL Azure server is created.
Note: Because the SQL Azure server must be accessible worldwide, SQL Azure configures the appropriate DNS entries when the server is created. The generated name ensures that there are no name collisions with other DNS entries. You cannot change the name of your SQL Azure server.

You must create firewall rules to allow access from the client computers, including your development computer so you can test your application.

At the top of the navigation pane, expand Subscriptions, expand the subscription, and then click the SQL Azure server you created in the previous procedure.
In the middle pane, click Firewall Rules.
Select Allow other Windows Azure services to access this server. A firewall rule called MicrosoftServices is added to the firewall rule list by default. This setting enables other Windows Azure services including Management Portal for SQL Azure to access the SQL Azure server. You will use the Management Portal for SQL Azure in the Create a SQL Azure Database section.
Click Add to create another firewall rule.
Enter a rule name, and an IP range, and then click OK. The rule name must be unique. The IP address of your computer is listed on the bottom of the dialog. If this is your development computer, you can enter the IP address in both the IP range start box and the IP range end box.
Note: There can be up as much as a five-minute delay for changes to the firewall settings to take effect.
The SQL Azure Database service is only available with TCP port 1433 used by the TDS protocol, so make sure that the firewall on your network and local computer allows outgoing TCP communication on port 1433. For more information, see SQL Azure Firewall.

Create a SQL Azure Database
To create a new database, you must connect to the master database. The following steps show you how to create a database using the Management Portal for SQL Azure.

At the top of the navigation pane, expand Subscriptions, expand the subscription, expand the SQL Azure server you created, click master, and then click Manage.

This opens the Management Portal for SQL Azure logon screen.

Enter the user name and the password that you specified when you created the SQL Azure server, and then click Log on. This opens the Management Portal for SQL Azure in a different browser tab or a new browser window.
Note: If an error occurs, it displays a message saying “There was an error connecting to the server” beneath the Password textbox. You can click on the message to see the error details. A common error is the firewall rule not created for the client computer.
In the Management Portal for SQL Azure, click New Query.

In the query window, copy and paste the following Transact-SQL script using your own name for the database in place of database_name:
CREATE DATABASE database_name;
Click Execute. Make sure the result pane showing Command(s) completed successfully.
Click Log off on the upper right corner, and then click Log off again to confirm logging off without saving the query.
Switch back to the Windows Azure Platform Management Portal.
From the View ribbon, click Refresh. The new database is listed in the navigation pane.
SQL Azure Database provides two database editions: Web Edition and Business Edition. Web Edition databases can grow up to a size of 5 GB and Business Edition databases can grow up to a size of 50 GB. The MAXSIZE is specified when the database is first created and can later be changed using ALTER DATABASE. MAXSIZE provides the ability to limit the size of the database.

You can also use SQL Server Management Studio 2008 R2 (SSMS) to create a SQL Azure database. For a list of supported tools and utilities, see Tools and Utilities Support (SQL Azure Database). For more information on creating SQL Azure database, see How to Create a SQL Azure database.

For each database created on SQL Azure, there are actually three replicas of that database. This is done to ensure high availability. Failover is transparent and part of the service. The Service Level Agreement provides 99.9% uptime for SQL Azure.

Connect to the SQL Azure Database
This section shows how to connect to SQL Azure database using different .NET Framework data providers.

If you choose to use Visual Studio 2010 and your configuration doesn’t include a Windows Azure web application as a front-end, there are no additional tools or SDKs needed to be installed on the development computer. You can just start developing your application.

You can use all of the same designer tools in Visual Studio to work with SQL Azure as you can to work with SQL Server. The Server Explorer allows you to view (but not edit) database objects. The Visual Studio Entity Data Model Designer is fully functional and you can use it to create models against SQL Azure for working with Entity Framework.

Using .NET Framework Data Provider for SQL Server
The System.Data.SqlClient namespace is the.NET Framework Data Provider for SQL Server.

The standard connection string looks like this:

You can use the SQLConnectionStringBuilder class to build a connection string as shown in the following code sample:

Using EntityClient Provider
The System.Data.EntityClient namespace is the .NET Framework Data Provider for the Entity Framework.

The Entity Framework enables developers to create data access applications by programming against a conceptual application model instead of programming directly against a relational storage schema. The Entity Framework builds on top of storage-specific ADO.NET data providers by providing an EntityConnection to an underlying data provider and relational database.

To construct an EntityConnection object, you have to reference a set of metadata that contains the necessary models and mapping, and also a storage-specific data provider name and connection string. After the EntityConnection is in place, entities can be accessed through the classes generated from the conceptual model.

Here is a connection string sample:

Create a SQL Azure Server, and a SQL Azure database called “School”. For instructions, see Create a SQL Azure Server and Create a SQL Azure Database.
In the Windows Azure Platform Management Portal navigation pane, click Database.
At the top of the navigation pane, expand Subscriptions, expand the subscription, expand the SQL Azure server you created, click School, and then click Manage.

Open Visual Studio 2010 and create a new console application project called SQLAzureEFHowTo.
In Solution Explorer, right-click the project name, click to Add, and then click New Item.
In Add New Item, select ADO.NET Entity Data Model, enter SchoolModel.edmx for the name, and then click Add.
In the Entity Data Model Wizard, select Generate from database and then click Next.
Click New Connection. If this is the first time using this wizard, the Choose Data Source dialog appears; select Microsoft SQL Server, and click Continue. Otherwise, it opens the Connection Properties dialog.
In Data Source, select Microsoft SQL Server (SqlClient), and enter the information for the School database on your SQL Azure server. If this is the first time using this wizard, select Use SQL Server Authentication, enter your SQL Azure server user name and password. Make sure to specify School in the Connect to a database box, and then click OK.

Make sure Save entity connection settings in App.Config is selected and the value is set to SchoolEntities. Select Yes, include the sensitive data in the connection string, and then click Next.
Make sure the Model NameSpace is SchoolModel, select Tables, and then click Finish. This creates a SchoolModel.edmx file in the project that defines an entity type for each table in the School database
Save the .edmx file. The wizard does the following:
Adds references to the System.Data.Entity.dll, System.Runtime.Serialization.dll, and System.Security.dll assemblies.
Generates the .edmx file that defines the EDM.
Creates a source code file that contains the classes that were generated based on the EDM. You can view the source code file by expanding the .edmx file in Solution Explorer.
Creates an App.Config file with the connectionStrings element.
In Solution Explorer, double-click App.Config to open it. Notice the connection string name is called SchoolEntities.
In Solution Explorer, expand SchoolModel.edmx, and then double-click SchoolModel.Designer.cs to open it. Notice the namespace is called SQLAzureEFHowto.
Replace the code in the program file with the code from this example.
Run the application.

SQL Server ODBC Driver Released for Red Hat Linux

Microsoft today released a 64-bit SQL Server Open Database Connectivity (ODBC) driver for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.

The company had promised to deliver this driver in mid-November as part of its SQL PASS Summit event announcements. This release is important for C/C++ developers using Linux operating systems and writing applications that tap Microsoft’s newer relational database management systems. It provides sqlcmd and bcp utilities for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 users and works with SQL Server 2008 R2 and SQL Server 2012 (formerly code-named “Denali”).

The new driver can be downloaded here. A 32-bit version is planned for an unspecified future release, according to an MSDN FAQ page. One caveat is that “AlwaysOn,” Microsoft’s branding for disaster recovery and high-availability features in SQL Server, isn’t supported in this release, but Microsoft is promising to add such support at an unspecified future date.

Additional Linux Support
While just Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 is supported now, Microsoft’s FAQ suggested that it may add support for “SUSE, Solaris, and HP-UX” Linux operating systems in the future. The driver itself is not an open source product and Microsoft does not plan to support SQL Server directly on Linux, according to the FAQ.

The release is another expression of Microsoft’s interactions with Linux at the interoperability level. It also shows that Microsoft is moving ahead with its roadmap change toward supporting open source ODBC-based APIs over its own proprietary Object Linking and Embedding Database (OLE DB) method. Microsoft will gradually step away from supporting its OLE DB provider, phasing it out over a seven-year period.

Microsoft has explained that its decision to shift to ODBC was based on customer feedback and its view that it will better facilitate tapping cloud databases, such as Microsoft SQL Azure. Microsoft plans to support SQL Azure connections in an “upcoming release” of this driver for Red Hat Enterprise Linux, according to the FAQ.

The shift also will help facilitate migrations from “legacy” databases to Microsoft SQL Server, including the forthcoming SQL Sever 2012, which is currently available as a release candidate. SQL Server 2012 will be the last Microsoft RDBMS product to support OLE DB.

In particular, the new driver for Red Hat Enterprise Linux makes things easier for Sybase migrations.

“For customers who want to move from Sybase to SQL Server, the SQL Server ODBC Driver for Linux allows C and C++ code to continue running in Linux environments,” Microsoft’s announcement explains.

OLE DB and Analysis Services
Microsoft’s roadmap move to ODBC stirred controversy in a Microsoft forum thread because SQL Server Analysis Services isn’t now supported via ODBC, potentially leaving some developers in a lurch. In response, Microsoft’s T.K. Anand promised such support would be added, although a timeline wasn’t discussed.

“As a result of the SNAC [SQL Server Native Client] OLE DB deprecation, Analysis Services will be enhanced in a future release to natively support ODBC for consuming data,” Anand wrote in September. “At that time, customers can switch their BI [business intelligence] applications from SNAC OLE DB to SNAC ODBC. This switch should be relatively straightforward and require just updating the connection string in the Analysis Services DataSource object.”
