Can VoIP replace traditional voice services: Myth or fact?

Ever since the first VoIP calls were made in 1973, the industry predicted that packetized voice would replace traditional voice technology in enterprise networks. Are Cisco, Microsoft Lync, and others now capable of replacing PBX platforms? The answer is “yes” and “no”. That’s because most organizations today are looking to move to one Unified Communications (UC) platform that supports all their communications needs – email, instant messaging, audio and video conferencing – not just voice. Let’s examine four commonly cited concerns about VoIP’s ability to deliver “ready for prime time” voice services and whether they are fact or fiction today. We’ll use the Lync Server UC system as a reference.

Myth #1: “Lync does not provide all of the features that my current PBX has.”
Yes, Lync does not “check-off” every feature box available with traditional PBX systems, primarily because Lync is a software-powered PBX. As a result, Lync’s foundation is very flexible and can be modified to fit almost any business need. It provides 90 percent of the features found in a traditional PBX, but also includes advanced telephony features like “true” E911, Call Admission Control, QoS, least cost routing, etc. Lync also offers branch office survivability, rich endpoints, and media bypass for voice components. Where Lync comes up short against PBX platforms is with large call center capabilities (Lync does include small call center functionality with Response Groups), paging, and shared lines. For most enterprises, these capabilities are not required, and if they are, can be addressed through third party partners.

Myth #2: “Lync is proprietary and hard to interoperate with.”
Lync is a part of the UCIF (Unified Communications Interoperability Forum www.ucif.org), whose sole purpose is to advance unified communications standards that enable interoperability across all vendor solutions. This is the same path that was travelled by the circuit switched technology vendors in the early days of that industry. More and more vendors are becoming UCIF members and solutions and standards that all vendors can utilize are surfacing every day. For example, Lync can natively interoperate with Polycom video endpoints without the use of any “middle” transcoding gateway. Also, generic SIP phones are becoming more common in Lync environments by utilizing partner solutions from NET and Audiocodes. Finally, Lync can interoperate with any PBX or PSTN connection with either a direct SIP connection (SIP trunk) or through a media gateway.

Myth #3: “Lync with Enterprise Voice introduces too much complexity.”
To the contrary, Lync reduces infrastructure complexity. By supporting virtualization for all workloads, Lync allows enterprises to implement a full “PBX” solution using as little as one server. A simple one server implementation can include the Front-End server with collocated Mediation server, and a SIP trunk to connect to an ITSP (Internet Telephony Service Provider). Also, since Lync uses Active Directory for authentication and directory services, there’s no need to maintain separate authentication databases and address lists for voice services. However, management complexity, which exists for both traditional PBX platforms and Lync, remains the same.

Myth #4: “Lync’s choices of endpoint devices are limited.”
Not anymore. Lync now supports a virtually unlimited number of devices, since basically any accessory with a microphone and speaker can be used as a phone. Microsoft has also created an official certification program for devices that are optimized to be true plug and play compatible with Lync and require little to no user configuration. This program currently has over 70 devices from 12 different vendors ranging from IP phones, USB, Bluetooth, Conferencing, and video devices. Lync Server and other unified communications platforms have matured to the point where they match the PBX capabilities required by most enterprises, while exceeding what voice-only systems can accomplish. These technologies are not your father’s VoIP. Since Lync and others support virtualization and can interoperate with existing PBXes, these new generation UC solutions can be easily taken for a test drive with full functionality under a trial license.

Configuring your Virtuozzo Firewall is one of the easiest ways to maintain server integrity and keep unwanted intruders out. It can also be a good place to check if certain applications are having trouble connecting or getting the right data. The first step in accessing the firewall is to be logged in and select the Firewall option. The firewall applies to the entire VPS, so ensuring a proper setup is necessary. Then, you can view a list of active Firewall rules. To the right you can see their descriptions and the amount of connectivity the provide either in to, or out of, the server.

Remember, the list on the screen is the active list of rules. To remove a rule, select the check box next to the name and then click Delete (lower right hand of the table). To add a rule, select Add Access Rule. This will take you to the next page where you can select any additional rules you may want to add to secure your VPS. You may also want to check “Firewall Setup” in Virtuozzo. This setting is by default on “Normal.” Additional fine tuning can be done in the advanced settings, though for most users the Normal setting will work just fine.

Setup of Parallels Virtuozzo with cPanel Migration

I will need the setup of Parallels Virtuozzo Containers for Linux hardware node. Configure the needed functions and services to support cPanel and all current functions that maybe running on the physical server. I will also need during this migration to upgrade from CentOS 5.4 to CentOS 6. At this time I will also be changing IPs of the cPanel server which will need to be coordinated for DNS changes and considered during this whole process.

I will be on-site eyes and hands for anything needed. I expect to be asked for or notified of any software or other local requirements that are needed for this project to go smoothly and quickly

The proposal chosen will also be given the opportunity for my second project. The project is to setup of Parallels Business Automation Standard (more on that project for the second posting).

Maximum SQL Server Express File Sizes

Microsoft’s SQL Server is a family of database server software products, including the Express Edition. Unlike other versions of SQL Server, which have licensing fees, the stripped-down Express Edition is free. With lower limits on file sizes, it’s meant for distributing with small-scale embedded applications, such as store display kiosks.

SQL Server
The SQL Server relational database runs on Microsoft’s server and desktop operating systems, including Windows 7 and Windows Server 2011. It uses the Structured Query Language, or SQL, to create and maintain databases structures and their data. Microsoft offers several versions of the software, including Web, Datacenter, Workgroup and Express, each using the same database files but having different limits. The Datacenter Edition, for example, is designed for customers with large datacenters and thousands of users. The Express Edition typically resides on a desktop computer and serves a single user.

Express Edition 2008 Limits
For Express Edition 2008 R2, Microsoft has raised the file limit to 10GB per database. The software saves all database data in a single MDF file, so, for example, it keeps a database called sales in a sales.mdf file on the hard drive. The 10GB limit is generous enough to accommodate the vast majority of embedded and desktop applications. Most applications run into other limits before reaching the file limit; at that point, the technical developer should migrate the application to another SQL Server edition with more generous limits.

Earlier Limits
Building restrictions into the Express Edition allows Microsoft to limit the overall resource requirements for SQL Server, an important consideration for desktops, notebooks and other small-scale computers. An earlier version of the software, Microsoft Server Desktop Engine, or MSDE, had a limit of 2GB per database file. The limit on the SQL Server 2005 Express was 4GB.

Other Limits
SQL Server Express can use at most 1GB of main memory and one physical CPU, though it may have multiple cores. In addition, Express lacks the SQL Server Agent. This is a separate process that, for larger systems, allows automated scheduling for tasks such as database replication and user-defined processes.

Windows Server 8 Hyper-V new features

At the recent Windows Server Workshop at the Microsoft campus in Redmond Washington Jeff Woolsey, Principle Program Manager Lead for Windows Virtualization in the Windows Server and Cloud division presented the new features in the next version of their Hyper-V virtualization platform. In the introduction to the workshop Jeffery Snover, Distinguished Engineer and the Lead Architect for the Windows Server Division made the bold statement that with Microsoft it’s the third release is where Microsoft really gets it right and with regard to what Microsoft demonstrated in the next version of Hyper-V this is definitely true. The upcoming Hyper-V 3.0 release that’s included in the next version of Windows Server has closed the technology gap with VMware’s vSphere.

Hyper-V 3.0 Scalability

The days when Hyper-V lagged behind VMware in terms of scalability are a thing of the past. The new Hyper-V 3.0 meets or exceeds all of the scalability marks that were previously VMware-only territory. Hyper-V 3.0 hosts support up to 160 logical processors (where a logical processor is either a core or a hyperthread) and up to 2 TB RAM. On the VM guest side, Hyper-V 3.0 guests will support up to 32 virtual CPUs with up to 512 GB RAM per VM. More subtle changes include support for guest NUMA where the guest VM has processor and memory affinity with the Hyper-V host resources. NUMA support is important for ensuring scalability increases as the number of available host processors increase.

Multiple Concurrent Live Migration and Storage Live Migration

Perhaps more important than the sheer scalability enhancements are the changes in Live Migration and the introduction of Storage Live Migration. Live Migration was introduced in Hyper-V 2.0 which came out with Windows Server 2008 R2. While it filled an important hole in the Hyper-V feature set it wasn’t up to par with the VMotion capability provided in vSphere. Live Migration was limited to a single Live Migration at a time while ESX Server was capable of performing multiple simultaneous VMotions. In addition, vSphere supported a similar feature called Storage VMotion which allowed a VM’s storage to be moved to new locations without incurring any downtime. Hyper-V 3.0 erases both of these advantages. Hyper-V 3.0 supports multiple concurrent Live Migrations. There are no limits to the number of concurrent Live Migrations that can take place with Hyper-V 3.0. In addition, Hyper-V 3.0 also provides full support for Storage Live Migration where a virtual machine’s files ( the configuration, virtual disk and snapshot files) can be moved to different storage locations without any interruption of end user connectivity to the guest VM.

Microsoft also threw in one additional twist that vSphere has never had. Hyper-V 3.0 has the ability to perform Live Migration and Storage Live Migration without the requirement of a shared storage on the backend. The removal of this requirement really helps bring the availability advantages of Live Migration to small and medium sized businesses that came afford a SAN or don’t want to deal with the complexities of a SAN. The ability to perform Live Migration without requiring shared storage really sets Hyper-V apart from vSphere and will definitely be a big draw – especially for SMBs that haven’t implemented virtualization yet.

VHDX, ODX, Virtual Fiber Channel & Boot from SAN

Another important enhancement with Hyper-V 3.0 was the introduction of a new virtual disk format called VHDX. The new VHDX format breaks the 2TB limit that was present in the older VHD format and pushes the maximum size of the virtual disk up to 16 TB per VHDX. The new format also provides improved performance, support for larger block sizes and is more resilient to corruption.

Hyper-V 3.0 also supports a feature called Offloaded Date Transfer (ODX). ODX enables Hyper-V to take advantage of the storage features of a backend shared storage subsystem. When performing file copies on an ODX enabled SAN the OS hands off all of the data transfer tasks to the SAN providing much high file copy performance with zero to minimal CPU utilization. There is no special ODX button. Instead ODX works in the backend. ODX requires the storage subsystem to support ODX.

Companies that use fiber channel SANs will appreciate the addition of the virtual Fiber Channel support in the Hyper-V guests. Hyper-V 3.0 guests can have up to four virtual fiber channel host bus adapters. The virtual HBAs appear in the VMs as devices very like virtual NICs and other virtual devices. Hyper-V VMs will also be able to boot from both fiber channel and iSCSI SANs.

Extensible Virtual Switch & NIC Teaming

In keeping par with the sweeping changes in Hyper-V’s compute capabilities and storage Microsoft also made a some of significant enhancements to Hyper-V’s networking capabilities. First, they updated the virtual switch that’s built into the Hyper-V hypervisor. The new virtual switch has a number of new capabilities multi-tenant capability as well as the ability to provide minimum and maximum bandwidth guarantees. In addition to these features the new virtual switch is also extensible. Microsoft provides a API that allows capture, filter and forwarding extensions. To ensure the high quality of these virtual switch extensions Microsoft will be initiating a Hyper-V virtual switch logo program.

Another overdue feature that will be a part of Windows Server 8 is the built-in ability to provide NIC teaming natively in the operating system. VMware’s ESX Server has provided NIC teaming for some time. Prior to Windows Server 8 you could only get NIC teaming for Windows via specialized NICs from Broadcom and Intel. The new NIC teaming works across heterogonous vendor NICs and can provide support for load balancing as well as failover.
